This popular houseplant is not only lovely to look at but also nontoxic, so it's safe for your pets. It produces long, purple shoots and fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves to form a bushy, compact habit. The leaves grow densely on thick stems and beautifully set off the plant's white, narrow flower spikes, which appear in late spring and remain until fall. The leaves also help clean the surrounding air, reducing formaldehyde levels indoors by as much as 47%. Peperomia grows best in a spot that receives at least a medium amount of light.
